Lake Amistad is surrounded by private land, except for designated access points provided by the National Park Service. These points are your only options for shore dives. The better dive locations are spur 454 Black Brush Point, or Diablo East Marina, (which has a designated dive cove), Governors Landing and the peninsula beyond the Air Force marina. The Box Canyon boat ramp area also has some good diving, but there are several miles of rough dirt road to get there.
By boat, locations are abundant. The better diving is in the Rio Grande arm of the lake, roughly from buoy one through seven on both the U.S. and Mexico side. While the Devils River itself is the clearest river in the state, for some reason, when it hits the lake, the water on that end is usually murky. If you do find yourself on the Devils River end of the lake, go as far up as you can and you can find some clear shallow water. Mike McCarson Back |
